Walker Brands

When Walker Brand Communications, the premier branding company in the Tampa Bay Area, decided to build their new offices in South Tampa, they knew it must be a facility that would
set them apart from any other building in Tampa. Therefore, they planned to have The Beck Group build the first LEED Certified Building in Tampa.

To create a LEED certified building, every product and service must be reviewed and evaluated for its contribution towards the LEED certification. Flooring products and the contractor that installs them are no exception.

When The Beck Group assembled the construction team to complete this project, they knew that Spectra Contract Flooring would be the best choice to deliver a flooring installation that would achieve all the goals of the end user. Once Spectra Contract Flooring was awarded the contract, the real fun began.

Walker Brand Communications wanted to install wood flooring throughout the majority of the space. They wanted to make sure that the wood selection worked well with the environmentally pleasing space they were looking to show off in the new building. Spectra Contract Flooring assisted the designer and end user in locating wood that would fit that need.

The heart pine used on the project was taken from the Suwanee River and was estimated to be over 150 years old. The wood used for the stair treads was taken from a barn built in 1860.

Spectra Contract Flooring was able to work through numerous challenges such as meeting the manufacturer's requirements for moisture in the slab, creating the thresholds and reducers in the field from the boards, and other installation challenges that come with 3/4" solid heart pine that was installed in ten to twelve foot long boards.

In the end, the installation as well as the overall project became a showpiece for Tampa Bay's entry into the world of LEED Certified Buildings.
