Resilient flooring

Resilient flooring offers many advantages and may be a strong, cost-effective solution for your project. As the premier flooring contractor in the U.S., we can help you select, procure, install and protect your resilient flooring.

Resilient flooring basics

Resilient tile, also known as vinyl flooring, is made from natural and synthetic polymer materials — large molecules composed of repeating structural units that provide great strength. There are a variety of great flooring options that fit within three broad categories of resilient flooring: sheet flooring, vinyl composition tile (VCT) and luxury vinyl tile (LVT).

Sheet flooring is a continuous sheet of polymer materials manufactured in six to 16-foot widths with a protective outer wear layer, an aesthetic digitally printed image layer and an internal felt layer.

VCT is a mix of limestone, thermoplastic binder, filler materials and color pigments. It uses chips that are fused into solid sheets with heat and pressure then cut into tiles. VCT uses several layers of floor polish to protect its surface.

LVT uses a predominantly limestone base material mixed with other composites and has a digital graphic layer on a film that’s applied and sealed under an outer wear layer.

Why choose resilient flooring?

Resilient flooring has surged in popularity for a range of commercial applications. New innovations have made many resilient materials more durable and cost-effective while extending its design versatility. Resilient flooring is often a suitable solution for achieving a premium, natural look with greater durability and lower cost.

Applications for resilient flooring

Resilient flooring is perfect for a wide range of commercial applications. From highly decorative entranceways and foyers in corporate buildings and hospitality settings to hallways and corridors in schools and healthcare facilities, resilient flooring has seen increased use. New resilient options can be treated for easy cleaning and infection control — perfect for hospitals and schools in particular.

Benefits of resilient flooring

Resilient flooring offers nearly limitless design versatility. VCT is inexpensive, and while it may not be suitable for high-traffic areas, quality VCT can withstand light traffic. Sheet flooring, VCT and LVT all stand up to water and sunlight. LVT can be constructed to withstand decades of the heaviest traffic. It uses a photographic layer, so it can match the assorted colors and looks of any natural material. New options even allow LVT to fit uncommon patterns with different shape constructions, such as planks, hexagonal tiles and rectangular tiles. Both VCT and LVT products allow for rapid commercial installations, as newer options click together and eliminate the need for wasteful glue installation.

Cost discussion

VCT has the lowest out-of-pocket installation costs of the resilient flooring options, but it offers minimal durability and requires high maintenance with waxing, stripping and other services. Particularly for high-traffic areas, you will usually get a greater lifetime value out of sheet flooring or LVT, which have a higher up-front cost but far better durability. LVT offers great cost advantages, both up-front against the price of more premium materials, and long-term due to its high durability and minimal maintenance requirements. All of these hard flooring options typically cost less than high-end finishes, such as commercial ceramic tile, stone tile or traditional wood flooring. Resilient flooring costs are often comparable to those of laminate floors.
